Don’t Eat the Menu:
A New Perspective on Communication

"To think that communication is words is like going into a restaurant and eating the menu." - John Grinder, founder NeuroLinguistic Programming

Communication is so much more than the words which we often take at their face value and our personal definition and history. We don't really listen beyond the words to the meaning and intent of the communication. Most business problems are related to poor communication and lack of understanding of communication styles. People think because we're talking English, we speak the same language - and that's just not how it is!

From this workshop you will gain clarity on your communication style, understanding of others' styles, skills for communicating in others’ styles and getting the results that you want.

TOOLS

  • A definition of communication that works

  • Neurolinguistic Programming (the study of how we receive, store and access information)

  • Communication Styles - Visual, Audio, Kinesthetic

  • Communication Techniques

  • Gaining rapport

  • Utilizing metaprograms

  • Communication Choices – tonality, words, body language

  • Congruency - mean what you say and say what you mean

Understanding Your Personality Style with Everything DiSC

All of us have developed behavioral patterns - distinct ways of thinking, feeling and acting. The central core of our patterns tends to remain stable because it reflects our individual identities. However, the demands of the work environment often require different responses that evolve into a work behavioral style.

Everything DiSC presents a plan to help you understand self and others in the work environment. You are the central focus as you heighten understanding of your style and identify the environment most conducive to your success. At the same time you learn about the differences of others and the environment they require for maximum productivity and harmony in the work environment.

Everything DiSC is not a test. You cannot pass or fail. There isn't a best pattern. Research evidence supports the conclusion that the most effective people are those who know themselves, know the demands of the situation and adapt strategies to meet those needs. In summary, Everything DiSC enables you to:

  • Identify your work behavioral style

  • Create the motivational environment most conducive to success

  • Increase your appreciation of different work styles

  • Identify and minimize potential conflicts with others

Everything DiSC is a self-administered, self-developing instrument. Conceived out of the needs expressed by individuals and work organizations, it collects and disseminates information in a rapid, economical way. It is a scientifically researched communications tool which opens the door to greater understanding of self and others in order to build and maintain a sense of personal worth and self esteem in our personal and professional lives. It was originally developed by Dr. John Geier, based upon extensive study of our behavioral tendencies and subsequently refined by Dr. Michael O'Connor. It has been tested and proved effective in following areas:

  • Training and Development of Personnel

Positive Power Plays: Conflict Resolution and Negotiation Skills

Too often when we approach a conflict situation. we come prepared ready to do battle - assuming that the other person doesn't want us to have what we want and we will have to fight for it. Perhaps there is another way. Redefining the situation from war to cooperation. And then, Tell the truth, Ask for what you want, and Be willing to negotiate. It's a simple three step formula to keep your power in conflict situations - without controlling or manipulating in a negative way - and get the results that win for both sides. The win is a working, enjoyable relationship that allows for clear communication and cooperation and gets the results both parties want.
